With many of us around the world in various lockdowns, I’ve come up with 5 virtual Valentine’s date ideas that you can do with your partner or friends without being in the same place!
Here in the UK it’s pretty certain we’ll still be in a national lockdown by the time February 14th appears. Not only does this mean that traditional Valentine’s dates like dinner at a nice restaurant, or going to the cinema are impossible, but for many of us it means we can’t see our boyfriend/girlfriend/significant other on the day. So for those of you who are in that boat, I’ve got some virtual date ideas that you can use for Valentine’s or even Galentine’s day!
1. Get Creative Over Zoom this Valentine’s Day
For those of you who enjoy dates where you are doing or making things, why not try this but over Zoom. At Christmas I sent my boyfriend a gingerbread house making kit, as well as buying one for myself. We then sat over Zoom and made them together! It was a really fun way to do something Christmassy even if we couldn’t be in the same place. Now obviously a gingerbread house doesn’t scream romance, so I’ve got a few ideas for you.
Why not try each ordering a paint-by-numbers kit? Even better, choose the same one and have a competition as to who created the best masterpiece! You could even have a prize at the end! If painting isn’t for you, you could do the same thing but using clay to make pottery!
2. Have a Surprise Virtual Valentine’s Dinner
Nothing says romance like a candle-lit dinner, and a web-cam lit dinner is the next best thing! Whilst your significant other can’t cook you a lovely dinner this year, they could choose your food for you! I’ve seen a few couples doing this throughout the past year (how has it almost been a year of this already!) and I think it’s a really sweet idea. You choose a time that you’re going to sit down over video together and order each other dinner for that time! So you get a nice little surprise (so long as your partner has good taste) as well as a romantic dinner together -wherever you each might be.
3. Virtual Cooking/Baking Date
This is kind of similar to my previous idea but instead of ordering in food, you make it yourself! I think this would be really cute to do over FaceTime, especially if you made the same meal at the same time and then sat down to eat together. Or if you’re not into cooking, you could try baking some Valentine’s goodies instead. Perhaps some biscuits that you can then decorate over video together too!
4. Virtual Valentine’s Movie Date
This is something I do often with both my boyfriend and friends. With chrome extensions like Teleparty (formerly Netflix Party) and Amazon’s new watch together function it’s never been easier to watch something at the same time! With my friends we tend to stick to Teleparty’s chat function. However, with my boyfriend we start a video call over Facebook and then watch together over Amazon. If you do this make sure you’re wearing headphones otherwise you’ll get feedback!
I really like doing it this way as it means we can chat naturally as we would if we were watching something together in person. And with so many online services to choose a film from, you’re bound to find the perfect romantic watch for your evening in!
5. Virtual Clubbing for the Perfect Galentine’s Eve Date
Now this idea I think relies on having a few more people (although I think the maximum might be six based on tech capabilities). For those who are missing the good old days of boogying the night away in your favourite club, using Spotify’s share function could solve your problem! Firstly, created a playlist you all love. Then one of you can begin playing it and send everyone else the share link. This means you’ll all be listening to the same thing at the same time!
You can put facetime on and have a dance together through the magic of the internet!
I hope these few virtual Valentine’s ideas help you navigate how to have a lockdown friendly date. Or simply inspire you with new things to do with your loved ones during lockdown whilst you can’t be together.
If you have any other ideas please leave them in the comments so everyone can see! I’m sure it would be very appreciated!

I’m grateful to be married and living with my quarantine partner. No more confusion with dates. We were long distance for the first year of our relationship, so we did Skype dates before it was cool (and before it was Zoom – haha!) Love the creativity here!

These are fun virtual date ideas. My hubby and I used to be in a long-distance relationship, and we did some of these. We would call each other through facetime and eat meals or watch the same movie together.
